Islamabad — May 5, 2025: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has issued a firm reminder to citizens regarding the cancellation of Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) of deceased family members, warning that failure to do so may lead to strict legal consequences.
In a public notice released earlier today, NADRA emphasized that it is mandatory under national registration laws to cancel the CNIC of a deceased person. The authority highlighted that families who neglect this responsibility not only disrupt vital records but may also be enabling potential misuse of identity documents for fraudulent or illegal activities.

“NADRA will take strict legal action against individuals or families who fail to report and cancel the CNICs of their deceased relatives,” said a spokesperson for the authority. “This is not just a procedural formality, but a legal obligation that helps maintain the integrity of national records and prevents identity theft.”
The authority urged citizens to visit their nearest NADRA office with the death certificate and other required documentation to ensure timely cancellation. A simplified process has been put in place to make this task more convenient for the public.
Legal experts also supported NADRA’s stance, stating that retaining a deceased person’s CNIC without cancellation can lead to complications in property matters, financial transactions, and inheritance cases.
NADRA concluded its statement by appealing to the public’s sense of civic duty and warning that ignorance of this responsibility will not be considered a valid excuse in the face of legal repercussions.
For more information, citizens are encouraged to contact the NADRA helpline or visit the official website.
