Tiktok Adds Whatsapp- and Instagram-Style Feature — Users Are Hooked

TikTok is rolling out new messaging features that will let users send 60-second voice notes and share up to nine photos or videos in chats. The update is being introduced globally over the next few weeks as the platform looks to expand beyond short videos and compete with apps like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Apple’s iMessage.

With the new voice note option, TikTok users can record and send audio messages up to one minute long in direct messages. This follows a growing trend among younger users, especially Gen Z, who often prefer sending voice notes instead of typing.

The update also allows users to share multiple images or videos in both one-on-one and group chats. Media can be taken directly from the TikTok camera or uploaded from the phone’s gallery, with editing tools available before sending.

To make messaging safer, TikTok has put restrictions on first-time chats. New message requests cannot include photos or videos from the sender’s camera. Instead, users can only share TikTok content in those first exchanges, reducing the chances of spam or unwanted content.

TikTok said safety remains a key priority while it works on improving its messaging tools. The changes are expected to keep users more engaged by allowing them to chat and share content directly on the platform rather than switching to other apps.

With these updates, TikTok is taking steps to become more than a short-video platform and move toward being a full social networking space where entertainment and communication go hand in hand.
